Japan: We are ready to host Olympics 2020

Japan is ready to host the Summer Olympics in July 2020 despite the outbreak of coronavirus, said Olympic Minister Seiko Hashimoto in the country's parliament on Thursday.

“Cancellation or rescheduling of the Games would be unacceptable for athletes. Conditions must be prepared in which athletes can feel at ease and focus on sports,” the minister said.

Earlier this week, she said that an agreement to host the Olympics until the end of 2020 could be interpreted as a possible delay. Her words raised many questions.

On March 4 after a two-day meeting of the executive committee of the organization, President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach said that the possibility of canceling or rescheduling the Games in Tokyo was not even discussed. The Olympics will be held from July 24 to August 9.

In Japan, on the morning of March 5, 1036 cases of infection with a new coronavirus were confirmed, which is 36 more than the day before. More than 700 of them are passengers of the cruise ship Diamond Princess. 12 people died, including six from the ship.
