“The day prior, many officials in the Japanese government stated that the US administration had informed the Japanese side of a proposal to add requirements for boosting its purchases of American rice in the US President's order on tariffs on Japanese goods,” the newspaper reads.

According to the newspaper, Japan firmly rejected this proposal, and Akazawa called off his scheduled trip to the US on the day of his visit.

However, the parties are still engaged in discussions.

Previously, while discussing the trade deal with Japan, US officials mentioned that it aimed to boost Japan's purchases of American rice by 75%.

Western media sources report that Akazawa was expected to come to the US to finalize the deal regarding Japan's $550 billion investment in the American economy. Simultaneously, Japanese officials sought for the US to modify the tariff regulation prior to the publication of a joint statement regarding Japanese investment.
