China Southern Airlines, the carrier with Asia's largest fleet, reported a net loss of 11.4 billion yuan (€1.6 billion) for the first six months of the year.

The company claims that the country's increasing COVID-19 prevalence and the severe restrictions placed on residents' freedom of travel are the main causes of the losses.

According to China Southern, Chinese airlines handled 118 million passengers in the first half of the year, a 46.7% decrease from the prior year.

China Eastern, the nation's second-largest airline, lost 18.73 billion yuan (€2.7 billion) in the first half of the year. This is 3.6 times more than in the first half of 2021.
When the company’s Boeing 737-800 crashed on March 21 in southern China, China Eastern not only incurred financial losses but also severe reputational damage. 132 people perished as a result of the collision.

Finally, Air China reported a net loss of 18.4 billion yuan (€2.6 billion) for the first six months of the year.
