As NASA emphasizes, the recently signed memorandum of understanding between the agencies advances US President Donald Trump's vision of American space superiority by deploying nuclear reactors on the Moon and in orbit by 2030.

NASA and the US Department of Energy plan to deploy a nuclear fission-based power system capable of producing safe, efficient, and abundant electricity that can operate for years without refueling.

"Deployment of a lunar reactor will enable sustainable lunar missions in the future, providing power regardless of sunlight or temperature," the statement reads.
