The first in-house game studio for Netflix has begun development; up until now, the streaming service had exclusively purchased successful products from developers.

Helsinki, Finland will serve as the home of the first Netflix game studio, according to Amir Rahimi, vice president of Netflix game studios. Marko Lastikka, who has previously worked with developers like EA and Zynga, will be the studio director.

Netflix "aims to develop a world-class gaming studio that will deliver numerous entertaining and engaging unique games - no adverts and no in-app purchases," according to Rahimi.

"Helsinki: Why? Here live some of the top video game talent in the world. Along with Next Games, which joined Netflix earlier this year, this will be our second studio in Helsinki and the first game studio we will build from the ground up," the company’s message reads.
