The new cabinet included 23 ministers. Of these, nine are without portfolio. A number of ministers from the previous government of the resigned Giuseppe Conte have retained their posts.

The list of ministers includes Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese, Health Minister Roberto Speranza, Culture Minister Dario Franceschini and Defence Minister Lorenzo Guerini. Stefano Patuanelli has moved from the Ministry of Economic Development to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella instructed former ECB chief Mario Draghi to form a new government in early February. The decision was prompted by the demarche of former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's Italia Viva party. It withdrew from the ruling coalition, depriving then prime minister Giuseppe Conte of majority support.
