New Report Finds Sales Of Coffee Chains In The US Hike 10 per cent Close To Pre-Pandemic Levels
According to a report released on Tuesday, sales by branded coffee shops in the United States increased 10per cent in the 12 months to June 2022 to reach $45.8 billion, a value that is 96per cent of pre-pandemic levels, while the number of stores surpassed levels seen before 2020.
 
According to World Coffee Portal's Project Café 2023, there are now 38,411 branded coffee shops in the United States, the world's largest consumer of the beverage, or 2.8per cent more than before the coronavirus pandemic.
 
Starbucks Corp, Dunkin' Donuts, and Panera Bread all increased their presence in the US market to 15,650, 9,262, and 2,173 stores, respectively, according to the report.
 
According to the report, most coffee chains increased sales in 2022 compared to the previous year, with 46 per cent achieving sales growth of 5 per cent or more. It further said, "ongoing staff shortages and an emerging cost-of-living crisis represent significant short-to-medium term challenges for the industry" in the future.
 
In terms of habits, it stated that the industry is still evolving as a result of the changes seen during the pandemic.
 
"Pre-ordering, delivery and drive-thru, are set to remain as consumers maintain a heightened desire for convenience."
 
Dutch Bros, based in Oregon, was the fastest-growing major U.S. branded chain, with a 28 per cent growth rate.
 
Blank Street Coffee, which is backed by private equity, was also singled out in the report for its rapid growth. It debuted in the midst of the pandemic in May 2020 and has since opened 40 stores in New York City and Boston, with a goal of reaching 100 by the end of the year.
