Revolut had earlier acknowledged a data breach impacting certain customers, caused by deceptive requests that seemed to originate from a government entity. The British fintech firm revealed private customer details to an unapproved third party after getting deceptive data requests from an email domain associated with a government agency.
As reported by TechCrunch, the compromised information comprised customers' birth dates, mailing and email addresses, telephone numbers, and duplicates of identification documents like passports and driver's licenses. Furthermore, the data might have contained verification selfies, account statements, and transaction records.
The Financial Times stated that those responsible for the breach threatened to sell private information about hundreds of customers to other criminal organizations if Revolut did not pay a $3 million ransom within 24 hours.
A collective identifying as "iamnotavillain" shared an ultimatum online on the afternoon of September 16, along with a digital countdown clock. Group representatives informed the FT that this marked their initial use of the internet to make demands and that no discussions with Revolut concerning the issue had occurred.
