China's development plan for 2026-2030 enhances the CTG sector's role in the domestic energy supply, suggesting that, as per experts, the nation is transitioning from dialogue to executing projects in this field.
Rystad predicts that China's capacity for coal-to-gas production will hit 9.4 billion cubic meters annually by the end of 2026 and expand to 28 billion cubic meters yearly by 2030, which is four times the total annual gas usage of Austria.
Wei Xiong, Vice President and Head of Gas Market Research at Rystad, states that the coal-to-gas initiative highlights Beijing's dedication to energy security: "As geopolitical factors increasingly affect LNG supply chains and pipeline paths, China is investing in gas that can be generated, stored, and delivered independently of foreign suppliers."
The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region has emerged as a vital center for the growth of the CTG sector due to low coal prices at the origin. Plants in the area are functioning at above 90% capacity, reflecting strong demand and the cost competitiveness of the generated synthetic gas versus imported options, as per a report from Rystad.
