According to STMicro's news statement, the factory is set to be erected in Catania, Sicily, with the backing of the Italian government, which will provide funding totaling two billion euros for the project.
The plant will produce 200-millimeter silicon carbide wafers for power modules and gadgets, and will do chip testing and packaging.
STMicro anticipates that production at the new site will begin in 2026 and reach its maximum capacity by 2033.
