Study: Hackers stole over $100M from blockchain systems in Q1

Hackers stole $108.3 million in the first quarter of 2021 from users of various blockchain projects around the world, according to research from Atlas VPN, an information security company.

In particular, cryptocurrency wallets and Ethereum blockchain exchanges were attacked the most.

Overall, there has been a 46% increase in the number of cyber-attacks on blockchain platforms compared to the same figure last year. Atlas VPN also estimated that the number of phishing sites rose to a record 2 million in a decade. Such sites typically steal usernames and passwords of victims.

Money was stolen in 81% of cases through ransomware. In total, over $1 trillion was stolen in 2020. 

The majority of attacks (85%) originated in the US. A record 204.4 million attacks were recorded in the country on May 9, 2021, of which 174.5 million were from the US.
