UN calls on G20 countries to eliminate coal infrastructure

Speaking at the Stockholm 50+ conference on the environment, UN Secretary General António Guterres called on the G20 countries to abolish coal infrastructure once more.

On the UN website, Guterres said, "Today I call on the G20 states to abolish coal infrastructure, phasing it out altogether by 2030 in OECD countries and by 2040 in all others."

He also advised all financial stakeholders to quit funding fossil fuels and instead invest in renewable energy.

He emphasized that the natural systems of the Earth are incapable of meeting humanity's demands.

"Every year, we devour (resources) at a rate of 1.7 planets. We would require more than three planets of Earth if global consumption were at the level of the world's wealthiest countries," according to the Secretary General.
