The Associated Press reports information from the White House. The timing for when the duties will come into effect is not mentioned. A high-ranking official informed the agency that the reduced prices for oil, gas, and electricity from Canada are aimed at limiting potential rises in gasoline or utility costs.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has instructed a reaction to the decision made by the U.S. Mexico's reaction will consist of "tariff and non-tariff actions." Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also revealed countervailing tariffs and did not dismiss additional actions.

Increasing tariffs is a campaign pledge of Donald Trump. He justifies it by combating drug trafficking and unlawful immigration. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed that the nation would quickly react to the US tariffs. Ottawa did not rule out cutting off electricity and energy supplies to the US.
