According to a spokesman from the country’s government, this is mostly due to increased global grain costs.

37 of Japan’s 47 prefectures want to limit the amount of rice planted.

Today, 80 percent of wheat and 90 percent of soybeans, which are required to satisfy the demands of the Japanese people, are imported, according to Japan Today, and their prices have surged as a result of the situation in Ukraine.
