About 100 thousand agricultural enterprises in Italy may close due to the coronavirus pandemic and the situation in Ukraine, according to the largest association of Italian agricultural producers Coldiretti.

Based on data from the national Agricultural Research Council, Coldiretti experts argue that the current crises have led to a sharp increase in production costs (fertilizers, diesel fuel, livestock feed). Costs for many farmers now far exceed revenues from the sale of their produce.

According to the association, about 11% of agricultural enterprises in the country are on the verge of closure and 30% of firms are forced to work at a loss.

These statistics lead Coldiretti to the conclusion that Italy's food autonomy is shrinking and the country is losing the ability to respond to supply shocks.
