Based on data from the national Agricultural Research Council, Coldiretti experts argue that the current crises have led to a sharp increase in production costs (fertilizers, diesel fuel, livestock feed). Costs for many farmers now far exceed revenues from the sale of their produce.
According to the association, about 11% of agricultural enterprises in the country are on the verge of closure and 30% of firms are forced to work at a loss.
These statistics lead Coldiretti to the conclusion that Italy's food autonomy is shrinking and the country is losing the ability to respond to supply shocks.
