UN warns of dangerous maritime trade situation

According to the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) 2022 study on maritime transport, the 20 largest carriers now account for 91% of all maritime trade worldwide, up from 48% twenty years ago. This could result in abusive activities in the markets.

The statement, which was posted on the organization’s website, stated that “during the previous 25 years, the top 20 carriers have increased their market share from 48 percent to 91 percent.”

The organization notes that this concentration may result in the misuse of market power, a lack of supply, and increased prices for shippers all over the world.

According to UNCTAD, over 80% of all traded goods are shipped by water around the world. The research states that between 2020 and 2021, carbon dioxide emissions from the global maritime fleet grew by over 5%.
