The automaker surpassed analysts’ expectations that Tesla would ship 309,158 vehicles, the agency said.

Meanwhile, the company’s CEO Elon Musk described the first quarter as “exceptionally challenging” on Twitter, noting that Tesla faced difficulties due to supply chain disruptions and a “zero tolerance” policy for the coronavirus in China. “The outstanding work of the Tesla team and key suppliers saved the day,” Musk wrote.

The automaker previously had to suspend operations at its Shanghai plant after the city imposed a lockdown due to a worsening epidemiological situation and new coronavirus outbreaks, Bloomberg wrote.

“We estimate that production of 20,000 to 25,000 [Tesla cars] had to be moved from the first to the second quarter because of logistical and plant problems,” Wedbush analysts led by Dan Ives said, adding that the numbers were still “better than expected.”
