The authority approved the plan because the Japanese government intended to employ nuclear power reactors more frequently. The facilities’ base life is 40–60 years.

Akira Ishiwatari, a committee member, rejected the choice because it did not comply with rules governing the safe operation of nuclear power facilities. Another member expressed outrage over the government’s allegedly “hurried” adoption of the plan.

Under the new plan, nuclear facilities will be subject to safety and equipment inspections every ten years after 30 years of operation.
