The agreements were signed while the leader of the Vietnamese Communist Party, To Lam, was in the United States to participate in the first meeting of the Board of Peace created by the US President Donald Trump.
One of the agreements involves delivering up to 40 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners to the newly formed Sun PhuQuoc Airways, with a total value of $22.5 billion. This is the biggest order for wide-body aircraft from the Vietnamese airline sector, and it is the first direct order placed by Sun PhuQuoc Airways, as stated by its parent company, Sun Group. Sun PhuQuoc Airways intends to increase the number of planes in its fleet to reach 100 by the year 2030.
Vietnam Airlines has placed another order, buying 50 Boeing 737 MAX planes for about $8 billion as part of the earlier announced US-Vietnam trade agreement. It also stated its plan to invest more than $12 billion in the purchase of 30 wide-body Boeing aircraft.
In addition, the low-cost airline VietJet has entered into a financing agreement with Griffin Global Asset Management to buy six 737-8 aircraft, which have a total listed price of $965 million. The Vietnamese company also entered into a $5.4 billion agreement with the American-based company Pratt & Whitney for the supply and maintenance of aircraft engines.
