China hits new COVID-19 infections record

A record 27,595 cases of the coronavirus infection were detected in China on Sunday, with most of the new cases occurring in Shanghai, according to data from China's State Health Affairs Committee.

According to the committee, 1,184 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 26,411 asymptomatic cases were detected in China over the past 24 hours, which the PRC counts separately.

Most of the new cases were detected in Shanghai, located in the east of the country. On Sunday, 914 confirmed local cases and 25,173 asymptomatic cases were detected in the city.

Authorities in the megacity, home to 24.9 million people, have imposed a lockdown since March 28 due to a new outbreak of coronavirus infection.

According to the authorities' plan, the lockdown, necessary to conduct two rounds of mass testing and prevent the spread of the disease, was to take place in two stages: from March 28 to April 1 in areas east and south of the Huangpu River and from April 1 to April 5 in areas west of the Huangpu River.
