The compact photonic chip can utilize photons to facilitate immediate data transmission between quantum computers, no matter the separation between them, according to the company. This principle is referred to as quantum teleportation and will enable quantum networks to expand.

The newly developed chip, created in partnership with the University of California, Santa Barbara, is compatible with current infrastructure and can now be utilized to establish wiretap-resistant connections, highly accurate time synchronization, and location validation.

Cisco's technology will also assist in drug development, addressing intricate logistics challenges and materials science.

Additionally, the firm has launched a quantum lab in Santa Monica (California), where researchers and engineers are developing future networking technologies.

Quantum computers will facilitate significantly quicker data processing, yet currently possess relatively low capability and are predominantly utilized for research objectives.

In recent months, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have unveiled quantum processors as well.
