Cyprus authorities are looking for an alternative to the Golden Passport Programme

In return for the discredited gold passport programme, the Cyprus authorities will come up with something else, the Cyprus Mail newspaper reported on 19 October, citing sources in the Cyprus government.

According to preliminary information, a solution that would be an alternative to the cancelled programme has not yet been worked out. At the moment, the authorities "have thoughts about a new programme for the near future," the publication says.

However, sources point out that the new programme will not necessarily involve the granting of Cyprus citizenship in exchange for investment, as it used to be. It is possible that investors will be given other incentives or privileges.

Previously, Al Jazeera launched an information campaign that showed that the Cyprus Ministry of the Interior was providing "gold passports" to people suspected of committing crimes or wanted.
