"Gas consumption in the EU in the third quarter of 2021 decreased significantly by 10%, or 7.5 billion cubic metres, compared to the same period last year to 64.4 billion cubic metres," the release said.

Demand for gas for power generation fell by 22 per cent and higher fuel prices reduced demand in energy-intensive sectors as well.

Gas consumption in the European Union in the first three quarters of 2021 was 291 billion cubic meters, 6% more than in the same period in 2020.

EU blue fuel production rose 4% to 11.7 billion cubic metres in the third quarter of 2021, an increase for the first time since 2017. "This could be due to higher wholesale gas prices, which made it profitable to reactivate some gas fields," the report said.

In the first nine months of 2021, gas production in the EU was 38.5 billion cubic metres, down 6% year-on-year.
