EU company bankruptcies grow by 2.5% in Q4 2025

According to a report from the EU Statistics Office, the number of company bankruptcies in the European Union rose by 2.5% in the fourth quarter of 2025 when compared to the prior three months.

The largest rises in the number of insolvent companies were seen in the accommodation and catering sector, which increased by 8.6%, followed by the information and communications sector with a 7.9% increase, and the transport sector with a 5.6% increase.  Only the trade sector experienced a decline of -3.4%, and the finance sector also saw a decrease of -0.7%. 

The count of business registrations within the European Union rose by 0.5% between October and December.  The information and communications sector experienced the highest growth, with an increase of 6.4%.  However, trade experienced a 0.3% decrease, whereas construction and transport each saw a 0.1% decrease. 

The count of bankrupt companies in the eurozone rose by 3.5% during the fourth quarter, whereas the number of new business registrations grew by 0.2%.
