On Saturday, the senator posted a message on his Twitter page saying there is a need for "the very rich to pay their fair share".

"Want me to sell more shares, Bernie? Just say the word...," the billionaire wrote in comments under Sanders' tweet.

In addition, Elon Musk replied that he "keeps forgetting that the senator is still alive."

On Thursday, Elon Musk sold 4.5 million of his Tesla shares for a total of about $5 billion.

Earlier, the businessman had lashed out at Democrats' proposed "billionaire tax" in the US Congress, the essence of which is to levy a tax on the growth of wealth. He offered to sell 10% of his Tesla shares, explaining that he had no other way to pay the tax.
