The third unit of the west-located Olkiluoto nuclear power station, a brand-new nuclear reactor called Olkiluoto-3, has begun full-scale operation in Finland, reported Reuters referring to a statement made by the reactor operator Teollisuuden Voima.
It states that the new reactor will help Finland reduce its reliance on energy imports from Sweden and Norway by providing around 14% of the country's electricity needs. The expected lifespan of Olkiluoto 3 is at least 60 years.
According to Jarmo Tanhua, CEO of Teollisuuden Voima, "production at Olkiluoto 3 will stabilize electricity prices and play a significant role in Finland's transition to green energy."
