"We have objectives, and we are committed to them," she informed journalists in Brussels. Von der Leyen answered a query regarding whether the EU could consider delaying the deadline for a full ban on Russian LNG, in light of the situation in the Middle East.

A staged prohibition on Russian gas imports to the EU started on March 8. Imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and pipeline gas under short-term or long-term contracts finalized or modified after June 17, 2025, are generally banned, with some exceptions.

Beginning April 25 of this year, imports of Russian LNG through short-term (up to one year) unmodified contracts will be prohibited, and from June 17, imports of pipeline gas under short-term unmodified contracts will be banned.

Beginning in 2027, there will be a total prohibition on LNG imports from Russia, and from September 30, 2027, a full ban on pipeline gas deliveries will ensue.
