He recalled that several cases of omicron infection have already been reported in Germany.

"We have to assume that Germany will no longer be able to avoid the wave caused by omicron, that it is coming. We are preparing for it intensively," said Lauterbach.

On Tuesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz presented a list of restrictions that will be in place in Germany from 28 December in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic. The list of measures includes particularly severe restrictions for the unvaccinated.

The strain of coronavirus B.1.1.529 which has been detected in South Africa and has been recognised as a virus variant of concern has been named the Greek letter Omicron. This was reported in a statement by the World Health Organization.
