Austan Goolsbee, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, cautioned that economic activity in the United States may decline this summer due to its current inflated levels, as businesses and consumers aim to increase inventories before import duties are implemented.

"Such preemptive purchasing is expected to be most evident in businesses," he told CBS News, specifically highlighting the auto sector's accumulation of imported components.

Goolsbee stated that the economic data for April appears stable, but "we're hearing much about proactive inventory buildup that may persist for 60 days or 90 days." He added that current economic activity might be "artificially elevated and then decline by summer as people have purchased everything."

The leader of the Chicago Fed pointed out that the tariffs set by US President Donald Trump exceeded the expectations of business leaders. Concerns exist that they may 'have a quite considerable effect on the activities' of businesses.
