Head of TotalEnergies: Energy transition will eliminate oil and gas dependence, but will increase consumption of other resources

According to Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of the French oil and gas business TotalEnergies, using decarbonized energy sources will enable a shift away from dependency on oil and gas toward dependence on rare-earth and other metals.

Mr. Pouyanné emphasized the possibility of a resource crisis for humanity if natural resources are not exploited wisely. "Copper may not be available in sufficient quantities to construct all the world's projected wind farms. To be honest, the globe will become less dependent on oil and gas and more dependent on other resources," he said.

CEO of TotalEnergies claims that distribution network expenditures are necessary for the realization of the energy transition. He thinks that the current gas and power crises in the European markets have demonstrated that there are not enough interconnectors in Europe.

The belief that we must expand investments in alternative energy sources while decreasing investments in hydrocarbons is a mistake that we are doing now, according to Mr. Pujanne. He added that while this lowers supply, it does not lower demand for hydrocarbons.
