"China's greatest digital powerhouse has virtually doubled its R&D spending over the last five years, reaching $22.1 billion in 2021 - more than any other corporation outside the US," according to the report.

Such amount represents approximately 22.4 percent of the company's sales in that year.

The agency reports that Huawei was one of just six firms in the world to spend more than $20 billion on research and development last year, with Microsoft ($22.2 billion), Apple ($23.1 billion), and Meta ($24.7 billion) among others.

Amazon ($56 billion) and Alphabet ($32.6 billion) spent the most on research and development.
