“Sources indicated that trade officials from India and the U.S. have adopted more assertive stances on several critical matters as they hurry to finalize a provisional deal before increased U.S. tariffs are implemented on July 9,” the agency stated.

Specifically, the two parties are in disagreement regarding US requests for India to allow genetically modified crops into its market. Washington is urging India to eliminate tariffs on medical devices and ease price controls for these products.

The agency states that India is requesting the US to remove it from under duties imposed on steel and automobiles. New Delhi has also warned of countermeasures if heightened U.S. tariffs on Indian goods commence on July 9.

The talks took place from June 5 to June 10 in New Delhi.
