Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the chairman of the board of directors of the conglomerate's parent company, made this announcement at a meeting of the company’s board.

The Economic Times writes that he stated that the investment would be substantial but did not reveal specifics of the company's intentions to join the semiconductor industry.

It was previously stated that the management of Tata was thinking of collaborating with the Taiwanese chip manufacturers Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) and UMC Group to construct a plant in Gujarat.
