Italian trade unions have declared planned strikes in the air transport sector on February 16 and March 7, even though the government asked them to delay the actions.

The strikes would affect air travel during the Winter Olympics, as reported by Corriere della Sera, which quoted a letter sent by the unions to the Ministry of Transport and the Employment Commission.

The unions stated that the protests are happening because of disagreements regarding the extension of the National Collective Agreement and corporate labor contracts, which have been expired for several months.

The planned strike, especially the one scheduled for February 16, is likely to have a major effect on Ita Airways.  Members of the Filt Cgil, Fast Confsal Av Unica, and Astra unions have announced a strike that will take place from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on March 7, which may cause disruptions to the normal operations of several airlines.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini described the unions' actions as "irresponsible and un-Italian."
