Microsoft has disclosed a new multiyear investment in OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. A week earlier, Bloomberg and Semafor claimed that Microsoft was in talks to invest up to $10 billion in the business that created ChatGPT. Microsoft did not specify the amount of investment.

According to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, "We have built our relationship with OpenAI around a shared goal to responsibly promote cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform." The business is happy to "continue our independent research" and "work to create sophisticated AI that helps everyone," said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

In 2019, Microsoft made its first $1 billion investment in OpenAI. Microsoft is now OpenAI's exclusive provider of cloud computing services as a result of that investment. On Monday, January 23, Microsoft announced that OpenAI will continue to be exclusively available through the Azure cloud service.
