Amazon and its affiliates have submitted the most of patent applications to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office over the past 20 years.

According to reports, Amazon has overtaken Google (now Alphabet) as the company with the most patents pertaining to unmanned cars over the past few years. On the other hand, Zoox, one of the most potential startups in the field of unmanned transportation, was acquired by Amazon in 2020 for $1.2 billion. This acquisition helped Amazon gain the upper hand.

Zoox revealed that it had started testing its unmanned cabs on public roadways in mid-February. A permit for road tests of Zoox robotaxis was granted by Californian authorities in July of last year. According to the business, results of tests conducted by its unmanned cabs in labs and on special tracks, which involved a total of 1,500 miles of driving, were submitted to regulators.
