He pointed out that a key divergence in perspectives on AI regulation remains between OpenAI and its rival, Anthropic.

Anthropic is seen as the top advocate for AI regulation in the sector; until recently, this position differed from the more relaxed view preferred by OpenAI, notes Politico.

Nonetheless, the distance between the top two AI firms has decreased in recent months, the article states. OpenAI has decided to endorse more stringent regulations following notable incidents related to hacking and the erratic actions of its models.

In late September, The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI delayed the launch of its latest AI model, GPT-6.1 Astra. The newspaper reported that issues emerged during testing when the model failed to consistently provide accurate information to users regarding the actions it had—or hadn’t—taken.

The firm intended to launch GPT-6.1 Astra in a few days or weeks. The model demonstrated greater ability than earlier versions in completing intricate tasks independently and in producing text. Nonetheless, OpenAI opted not to release it, prioritizing improvements in the safety of upcoming models anticipated to be even more powerful.
