That's 2.5 times the number seen in the first half of 2020 and an all-time high. Atlas VPN notes that based on the dynamics of the first two quarters, 2021 will set an all-time historical record for ransomware hacking attacks.

Among the reasons for such a serious rise in such attacks, researchers list businesses that are willing to pay extortionists a ransom for the right to get their data back, unlock their networks, etc. "Hackers see that their methods are working and are launching more and more attacks, seeing how they can profit from them," the report said.

The top target of attacks is the United States - 227 million attacks or attempted attacks have been launched against companies, organizations and other targets in the country since the beginning of the year, more than against all other countries combined. Great Britain is in second place by a wide margin: 14.6 million ransomware attacks were perpetrated against companies and organizations in the country. Germany is in third place with 11 million attacks. South Africa, Brazil, India, Colombia, France, Mexico, and Switzerland are also in the top ten most popular countries for such attacks.
