The bilateral agreement on legal assistance between Sweden and Ecuador, which is expected to be applied for questioning Julian Assange, may be ready before Christmas, head of central administration of Ministry of Justice of Sweden on criminal cases and international judicial cooperation Cecilia Riddselius told on Monday.

- The negotiations on the officials level are still ongoing and it is expected that the agreement will be ready before Christmas," - she said without specific amendments on the day or month.

Earlier in the day of the negotiations’ start, she said that she wanted to "emphasize that we are talking about general bilateral agreement on rendering legal assistance and the specific case. We hope that the agreement can later be applied in the case of Assange and his interrogation".

She said the bilateral agreement of a general nature has emerged in the news after the obstacles that arose in connection with the request of the Swedish prosecutor's office, sent at the beginning of June 2015 to the authorities of Ecuador on the questioning Assange in London at the embassy of the country, where he was granted asylum.

In response, the Ecuadorian authorities have offered to conclude an agreement that would guarantee Assange that his refugee status will remain intact. However, the Ministry of Justice of Sweden has considered this issue irrelevant. In addition, for Assange to recognized as a refugee in Sweden, he should be resting in Sweden, and the decision shall be taken by the relevant authorities.

In Sweden, name of Julian Assange became well-known in connection with the investigation launched by the summer of 2010 at the request of two women 25 and 35 years old. Assange himself has denied any involvement in the sexual offenses. June 19, 2012 it became known that Assange arrived in Ecuador's embassy in London and asked the Ecuadorian authorities of an application for political asylum because of fears that the Swedish authorities could extradite him to the United States in connection with his activities in the WikiLeaks. Assange has been hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy since the application. In mid-March of 2015, it became known that the prosecution intends to question Assange in Sweden.
