Switzerland to hold referendum on 10 million population cap

02/12/2026

Switzerland is planning to conduct a vote where citizens will decide on a plan to limit the nation's population to 10 million people. The government has announced that a vote on the initiative, which is backed by the influential right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP), will occur in mid-June.

According to the Financial Times, this decision may put at risk important agreements with the European Union and could reduce the number of skilled foreign workers coming to Switzerland.

The initiative suggests capping Switzerland's permanent population at 10 million by 2050, and implementing automatic restrictions if the population surpasses 9.5 million before that date. These measures involve lowering the number of asylum applications allowed and restricting the ability of family members to reunite.

The present population of Switzerland is 9.1 million, which represents a 25% increase from the year 2000, partly because of a significant number of immigrants moving there. The percentage of foreign nationals living in Switzerland is among the highest in Europe, reaching 27%.

The Financial Times reports that there is significant support for the initiative aimed at limiting the country's population. The Senior Vice President claims that the rapid increase in population is putting too much strain on infrastructure, harming the environment, and causing rental costs to rise.
