As of June 17, there were just over 121,000 members of Tesla's "all-employee" email list, including temporary employees. As per the official filing for the fourth quarter of 2023, the company's workforce at the end of December was 140,470 people.

On June 17, Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, informed all staff members via email that "over the next few weeks, Tesla will conduct a comprehensive analysis to make grants with options (on company stock) for exceptional performance." Such grants, it continued, will also be awarded to "anyone who does something outstanding for the company."

The layoffs were declared in April. Musk then discussed his goal to cut more than 10 per cent of employees.
