The U.S. budget deficit decreases by 9% in May

According to the Treasury Department, the budget deficit for the U.S. in May reached $316.004 billion, a 9% decrease compared to the same month the previous year.

Last month, budget revenues rose by 14.7% to $371.229 billion, with customs duties contributing $23 billion to the budget, nearly four times greater than last year's amount ($6 billion).

Spending rose by 2.5% and reached $687.233 billion. Concurrently, interest payments on the national debt fell by 10% - to $92 billion.

Revenues increased by 5.9% to $3.482 trillion, while expenditures grew by 7.9% to $4.846 trillion.

As reported earlier, the U.S. state budget's deficit at the conclusion of fiscal year 2024 was $1.83 trillion, reflecting an 8% rise.

The country recorded a historic deficit of $3.1 trillion at the close of the fiscal year 2020. The last recorded budget surplus occurred in fiscal 2001.
