The largest “piece of Mars" on Earth to be sold at Sotheby's

07/14/2025

A 25 kg rock will be auctioned at Sotheby's. It is anticipated to be auctioned for 2-4 million dollars. This substantial price is attributed to the fact that it is the largest Martian rock discovered on Earth.

According to the Associated Press, referencing the auction house, the NWA 16788 sample originates from a meteorite that was ejected from Mars due to an asteroid impact. It journeyed over 225 million km and landed in the Sahara. The “meteorite hunters” discovered it in Niger in November 2023.

A rock measuring 375x279x152 mm holds around 7% of all materials present on Mars. It is 70% bigger than all other pieces of the planet discovered on Earth.

A forthcoming auction in New York will showcase natural history, including the skeleton of a young Ceratosaurus measuring over two meters in height and almost three meters in length.
