Unnamed US officials told the newspaper that the alliance's membership of these countries has been "a topic of discourse" during NATO foreign ministers' meetings.

The Times claims that "Finland is anticipated to apply in June, followed by Sweden."

Sweden and Finland will boost NATO capabilities, particularly in the field of intelligence and as part of air force development, according to assertions made by other European officials.

These countries will become "serious actors" in the alliance, according to one diplomat.
