11/20/2018

Donald Trump became the first president of the United States to make money in the midterm elections to Congress. According to the budget committee of the House of Representatives, during the pre-election race the head of the White House received at least $ 3.2 million, billing for the use of their property by the Republicans.

According to the rules, Presidents of the United States do not participate in the midterm elections to Congress. The right to collect money is given to candidates from parties and national committees of Democrats and Republicans. Fixed assets come from private donations to the candidate’s fund. Often, these funds are very small - personal deposits can range from $ 1 to $ 10.

For example, in 2010, the election campaign of President Barack Obama decided to return to voters all the funds allocated to the headquarters of the National Committee of the Democratic Party. Two years later, the ex-president raised $ 738 million for a new election campaign, but the start of a new fundraising was announced only in spring 2011, six months after the completion of the failed mid-term elections for the Democrats.

Contrary to tradition, Donald Trump announced a new fundraising for his presidential campaign in 2020 immediately after the inauguration. According to the National Committee of the Republican Party, by September of this year he managed to raise more than $ 60 million.

At least another $ 46 million were earned from sale of caps, T-shirts and coffee mugs with the logo “Make America great again”, the election slogan of the current President.

In addition, in preparation for the mid-term elections held on November 6, Republicans paid at least $ 3.2 million to companies that are still controlled by the US president. These funds came, among other things, from organizing conferences and renting rooms at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, renting meeting rooms at the Trump Tower in New York, and booking rooms at golf clubs owned by Donald Trump in New York Jersey and Florida. Another $ 1.2 million Republicans paid for the use of personal aircraft belonging to the President of the United States. He himself does not use them yet, moving on the state-owned Air Force One.

At the same time, it became known that in preparation for the midterm elections, Donald Trump's election headquarters collected and spent $ 8.9 million on political advertising. More than half of this amount - $ 5.1 million - was transferred to a company that was founded by one of the leaders of Trump's campaign headquarters.
