According to The Financial Times, the regulatory body will evaluate a related application from Perrigo's HRA Pharma division in November and is currently in talks with Cadence Health, a different pharmaceutical company, to market its birth control product without prescription.

These are the first attempts to create over-the-counter birth control pills, which have been legal in the United States for more than 60 years but have only ever been available with a prescription.

The businesses proposing to make them available over-the-counter are of the opinion that providing women with greater access to pregnancy prevention is essential in light of the fact that many states have severely restricted or outright prohibited abortion folowing the Supreme Court's decision in June.

Most medical organisations, including the American Medical Association, support the option of obtaining birth control pills without prescription.

The Guttmacher Research Institute estimates that 3 million pregnancies, or roughly 45 percent of all pregnancies in the United States each year, are either unwanted overall or at a specific moment.
