UN: COVID-19 vaccinatation of 40% of world population requires $8B

$8 billion must be raised to help vaccinate 40% of the world's population against the coronavirus by the end of the year, UN Secretary General António Guterres said.

He also complained once again about the lack of a mechanism to distribute vaccines among countries.

Mr. Guterres discussed the fight against COVID-19 at a press conference following a meeting with the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The WHO aims to vaccinate 70% of the world's population against the virus by mid-2022.

"Not achieving a fair distribution of vaccines is not just immoral, it is unwise," said the UN secretary-general, quoted by The Guardian. He called on G20 countries to help solve the problem at a summit planned in Rome on 30-31 October.

The Mexican foreign ministry said the unequal conditions created restrictions on Russian and Chinese vaccines against the coronavirus.
