“An increasing number of individuals are linking to the grid. An increasing number of cities are experiencing higher temperatures, leading to a greater need for cooling. An increasing number of technologies, ranging from artificial intelligence to digital financial tools, are becoming more power-intensive. Governments must guarantee that all new energy needs are satisfied with renewable energy,” he stated while presenting a report on the new energy era.

The report strongly argues that the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy is unavoidable and highlights the significant advantages it will offer to individuals and economies. Guterres mentioned that AI has the potential to enhance the efficiency, innovation, and resilience of energy systems, though it demands substantial electricity as well.

The expense of generating solar energy, once four times more expensive than fossil fuel energy, is currently 41% less, as stated by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IREA). Wind energy has become 53% less expensive.

“Although the demand for renewable energy is increasing and its vast potential is significant, developing nations are falling behind in the energy transition,” stated Guterres.
