US allows Chevron oil company to negotiate with Venezuela

A senior US administration official informed reporters that the US Treasury Department has approved a general license allowing the oil corporation Chevron to begin conversations with President Nicolas Maduro's government about future actions in the country.

During a special briefing, a White House official said that "the US Treasury Department has approved a narrow general license that authorizes Chevron to negotiate about its future actions in Venezuela."

However, he highlighted that the exemption only allows for a discussion about future actions and does not allow for cooperative ventures with the Venezuelan oil corporation PDVSA at present time.

Delcy Rodriguez, Venezuela's vice president, acknowledged assumptions in the media that the US had cleared the resumption of operations in the South American country.
