Federal Judge in Fort Worth, Texas, agreed to drop the criminal case against Boeing and approved a settlement. The deal will cost the company a total of $1.1 billion. Boeing will pay a fine of $487.2 million, contribute $444.5 million to a fund for the families of crash victims, and invest $455 million to improve its safety, compliance, and quality control programs, according to Bloomberg.
This decision ends a long legal fight over the crashes of Lion Air flights in Indonesia in October 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines flights in March 2019, which resulted in the deaths of 346 people. Both accidents were caused by problems with the flight control systems on the 737 MAX.
The aircraft were grounded around the world in March 2019 and returned to service in late 2020.
